Although babies can tolerate pain better than adults it can still be painful for adults to circumcise.
The pain may last up to three to four hours after the procedure. To ease the pain, you can take
acetaminophen following the procedure. Your baby will likely be fussy afterward, and may have
difficulty sleeping or feeding. While a circumcision is a relatively minor surgery, it can increase
your child’s sensitivity.
The pain from circumcision is usually mild to moderate. It is possible for younger children and
young adults to experience painful circumcisions, but this is rare and often only occurs when
there are complications. Children who are under anesthesia will not feel much pain. A penis
bruise will last for several days after anesthesia. The discomfort of urinating after the
circumcision can be painful. However, pain medication can help you to manage the pain.
Petroleum jelly may also be used to treat the penis. Lie on your side afterward to reduce the
pain. Avoid lying on your back or in a reclined position for a couple of days.
A painful circumcision can also occur if the penis retracts due to phimosis. This is caused by
abnormal tissue growth in the foreskin of the penis. It results in an ugly lump under the foreskin.
It is more common in older boys.
The doctor will numb the penis area using a local anesthetic. To manage the pain, you may take
acetaminophen (or other pain medication). The circumcision takes approximately thirty minutes
to complete. You should expect to stay a little longer if you visit the doctor. To reduce discomfort,
the doctor may give an oral medication. To minimize stress from the procedure, your son might
be wrapped in a towel.
After the procedure, you will need to clean the area around the Plastibell with an antibacterial
solution or unscented petroleum jelly several times per day. It is not advisable to apply antibiotic
ointment directly to the Plastibell. The circumcision area may take seven to ten days to heal.
After this time, your baby will no longer need special care for the circumcision site. However, you
should be informed that you may need to change diapers more frequently for a few days.
Some people opt for a circumcision to lower their risk of developing HIV, HPV, and a urinary
tract infection as a child. Women who partner with circumcised men are less likely to develop
cervical cancer. There are risks of complications, however, such as bleeding too much, or
complications caused by the pain relief method or medicine used to relieve the pain. However,
the chances of complications in younger children are lower than in older children.
A newborn who has not received analgesia does not show signs of pain or stress. These include
changes in blood pressure, oxygen saturation and cortisol levels as well as changes in sleep
patterns. Analgesia can be safe and effective as the signs and symptoms of pain disappear
within 24 hour. Even if you’ve had a circumcision without analgesia, the pain will still be present.
A combination of acetaminophen and lidocaine is used to provide pain relief.
Uncircumcised men are at greater risk. The risk of HIV infection rises if the penis is not
circumcised. However, there has been no direct evidence linking circumcision and HIV infection
in studies. Studies done in Asian and African populations also suggest that there is no link. If you
are interested in whether circumcision can prevent these diseases, consider getting it for
yourself. It’s not nearly as harmful as you might think.
The penis is removed from the head during a circumcision. The excess foreskin is then clipped
off. For newborns, the whole process takes about five to nine minutes. For adults, it usually takes
around an hour. The degree of discomfort and the method used to numb the area will determine
the recovery time. The procedure is painless for newborns. However the lack oxygen supplies
the penis’ sensitive region, the corpora Cavernosa, with oxygen, it can feel the pain.
Another reason to circumcise is to lower the risk of certain sexually transmitted disease, such as
HIV. Circumcision also helps you keep better genital hygiene. After the circumcision, you can
easily wash your penis, which makes it easier to maintain healthy sexual habits. For some men,
however, the process can be difficult both mentally and physically. So, it is important to find out
the risks and benefits before you decide to go through with it.
